Oh Man :(
One thing for sure brother you do this work long enough, stuff happens :p
Oh, darn. What a bummer.
Oh man! That stinks! Will you be able to reclaim the ivory and jade portion?
Still looks nice, chunk missing or not. I say finish it up seal and stabilize the missing chunk and stick a knot in it. I'm sure it will find a happy home.
That sucks. :( But hey, it'll still hold bristles just the same! :D
Will never hold a knot,go's in the bone box
Damn,....that's tough.
Hopefully that little flying piece didn't hit anything of value,....know what I mean Bill? :w
Pixel, hollow that spot out a little, find a stone/gem worker, show him or her the spot and they will find a nice agate or appropriate stone and shape that can be glued/epoxied in. Start a new trend/style and charge more for the effort. Make it happen and reap the rewards.
I say drill out the bad spot & make a nice pipe out of it,,,
<<<<<<<<<,,,<,,<<<,<<,:gaah:
The like was not for in a good way Bill.
I say epoxy it, fill it in I know someone who would be proud to own a Pixelfixed work even if it was rejected by QC.
Still looks gorgeous to me, but hey I appreciate the inherent flaws in myself, my friends and the like as well.
I just contributed to the drug business in California,,,,,,:gaah: :rofl2:
Yeah,,,Attachment 150632,,,,when everybody reworks their Veggie gardens,,the annual worth will drop to 100 million,,,they will be lucky to collect 15 million,,,,& that will be used to feed the sea lions in San Francisco Bay,,,, ;)
Bummer about the brush handle hope it wasnt a "made to order" piece but an improvisation piece...
I think you should embrace the blown up burl, celebrate the perfection of imperfection, and market a line of these as the Wabi Sabi brush.
They'll be big in Japan. :)
What he said. Peterson, Comoy and many others didn't throw that old briar bowl away when shaping the bowl revealed a fault. They got out the old putty fill and some of them used epoxy with briar dust. Anyway, I know that pixelfixed has the ingenuity to turn that lemon into lemonade :tu
OUch... at least you didn't find lead this time :<0)
Unfortunately looks like remix time to a new shape possibly. the fun of working with wood rapidly spinning
Heck if you are throwing it away... I will pay shipping and you can send it to me... :) :beer1:
I think it gives it some great character makeing for a more organic feel. Please dont trash it give it to some one who will enjoy it. Chevhead's offer sounds good.
I recon you can reuse the ivory and jade so put this one down to experience, still these things are sent to try us, the next brush will be even better.
Maybe so,I have a box full of crop failures:(

When I have an issue such as you have here, I will look things over and see if I did something wrong. Then look at it as a learning lesson. Inspect the work piece to see if it has a plan "B" and can still be used but with the desired results I have set for myself.
But most of the time they end up in the bucket-o-wrecks. Then move on and start again or evaluate another plan of attack!!
Things like this happens even when you have made every effort to cover all the bases!
You just put it behind you and move on!!

I'm not familar with your lathe setup but is the ivory the top? I would drill straight through to the otherside and plug it with something like horn on bothsides. Might save it....Cause that sure looks like it would be a sweet brush handle
the old time gunmakers had a what they called woodwelling. they would drill a hole and then make a plug out of the same wood then put them together. the process is too long to go into here but it worked. some of the old gun-smith books might show you better than me. sorry it happened to ya . good luck in the future
